There are many signs of a water leak, including musty smells, mold or mildew, an unexplained surge in your water bill, and more. One way to get a clear indication of a water leak is to check the water meter. Record the level and make sure no one uses any water for several hours, and check it again. A good time to do this is at night, when the household is asleep and not using any water. If your water meter has shown activity during the time of no usage, then you probably have a water leak and should call for professional help.
The simplest and easiest way to unclog a toilet is with a plunger, but if you don’t have one and can’t wait until you can get one, there is a home remedy you can try: fill up the toilet bowl with some laundry or dish detergent, then add a pot of hot boiling water to the bowl and wait several minutes before flushing. The hot water should break down the materials causing the clog and push through the clog, while the soap is washing everything through and out of the drain.
Open up the toilet tank and add a few droplets of food coloring to the water, wait for about 20 minutes and check the water in the toilet bowl. If you see clear water in the bowl, you don’t have a leak; if you see any color in the bowl, then you know what that means!
If the water pressure in your shower is always low, even when other faucets or appliances are not being used at the same time, then you most likely have a pipe or patch leak. If the pressure is only low when other sources of water are being run, then your plumbing system is inadequately supplying water.
Typically a water heater lasts anywhere from 8 to 12 years.
First, make sure you turn off and unplug the garbage disposal before inserting your hand in it to check for anything that might be causing the blockage. You can get severely hurt if the disposal turns on with your hand in it! You can use a natural cleaning remedy with a quarter-cup of baking soda followed by a half-cup of vinegar. Let the water run for a few minutes to clear the clog. After you’ve rinsed the drain, plug the disposal back in and try running it with water still on and running.
Baking soda and vinegar is again the powerful duo for this problem. Add a half-cup of baking soda to the drain, then add a half-cup of vinegar and let the mixture settle for about 15 minutes. Then run hot water from the faucet and turn the disposal on for about 30 seconds, letting the mixture move around and clean the drain.
If you detect a leak from your water meter, you should call a plumber immediately. It’s also important to contact the water utility provider, because if the source of the leak is between the meter and the water utility, the financial responsibility falls on the water utility provider. If the source of the leak is between the water meter and your home, it is your financial responsibility.
Main water lines should be replaced when there is corrosion. Older homes that were built 60 or more years ago should have pipes checked once a year for any signs of corrosion.
