Dealing with a clogged drain can be frustrating, but a plumbing snake (also known as a drain auger) can be a lifesaver. This simple tool is highly effective for clearing blockages that are too stubborn for plungers or chemical drain cleaners. Here’s a step-by-step guide from City Plumbing and Rooter on how to properly use a plumbing snake to tackle those pesky clogs.
Before you start, make sure you have the following tools ready:
Start by feeding the snake’s metal cable into the clogged drain. If you’re dealing with a sink or tub, you may need to remove the drain cover or stopper first. Gently push the snake into the drain, allowing the cable to work its way through the pipe.
Once the snake is inside the drain, begin rotating the handle clockwise. This helps the snake grab onto the clog as it moves through the pipe. Continue feeding the cable while maintaining steady pressure to ensure it moves deeper into the drain.
As you push and rotate the snake, you’ll likely feel resistance when it encounters the clog. When this happens, don’t force it. Instead, keep rotating the handle to allow the snake to latch onto or break up the blockage.
After the snake has engaged with the clog, you have two options. You can try to break through the clog by continuing to rotate the handle and push the snake forward. Alternatively, you can pull the snake back slowly, which may bring the clog up with it. If you’re successful in removing the clog, you’ll notice that water starts to drain freely again.
Once the clog is removed, pull the snake out of the drain carefully. Be prepared for some dirty water or debris to come up with it. Clean the snake off with a rag or hose it down to remove any residue. Run hot water down the drain to ensure the blockage is completely cleared and that the pipes are flowing properly again.
If the clog remains after using the snake, or if you experience frequent blockages, it may indicate a more serious plumbing issue. In such cases, it’s best to contact a professional plumber. At City Plumbing and Rooter, we have the experience and tools necessary to tackle even the toughest clogs and ensure your plumbing is functioning properly.
